Motatupu Camp 2010

On Monday 3 May was the day of camp. We went with syndicate D to Motatupu Island for camp. We on a ferry to Rangitoto then went for a 6.5km walk to the Outdoor Education Centre Motutapu Island. It was so exhausting! When we arrived at camp everyone went to their dorm to get unpacked then we started our first activity. My group was 28A and our parent was Kyle’s dad, Mr Glogoski, but we did our activities with 28B.

Our first activity was sailing. On my first turn on the boat, Sonna controlled the tiller and I controlled the main sheet and Krishna did nothing because she didn’t want to and also we’re scared she might make our boat tip. On our second turn me and Sonna swapped jobs. The instructor, JR, told us to go very fast so I had to sit on the edge of the boat and put my feet over the tiller to control it. Because of the current and wind the boat went the wrong direction and capsized! Finally after Krishna climbed in the boat a pool started to rise inside our boat so JR told us to go in his boat. When we arrived on the beach JR said we broke the record of the fastest sailing.

The second activity was raft building .I got a huge bruise because when I fell out of the raft my legs hit the bamboo. Later our raft broke in half and we lost so we splashed watr all over the other team.

After dinner we had our night activities. For night activities we played games with Matt. Later we had diary writing, supper then bed time. On my first day at camp was not as boring as I expect it would be!

On the second day at camp I woke up very excited. After my quick breakfast I got changed into longer pants because I had rock climbing as the first activity. I only did the easiest climbing wall, the slab, because it started to rain.

After morning tea we had confidence course. It was kind of boring because all we did was played some balancing games and thinking games. My favorite activity was when we had to carry someone through a hole inside the net without letting them touch the side.

Next we had kayaking .We kayaked near the boats and one of the boats nearly crashed into some of the kayaks in the way. We played water polo and Mr. Glogoski fell of his kayak.

When I heard that we had high ropes next I was so excited. Firstly I went on the net .I got cramps after I got down. Later I went for the beam .As I reached the top of the pole my feet started to turn into jelly as it kept shaking. As I started to make my trip to the other end I got more confident and walked faster. Went I got down Miss Mudford said I was the fastest to walk across the beam. Kyle’s eyes went red when he came down because he was scared. Kimberley was so frightened but she made it. Krishna had to get rescued because she stayed in the same position the whole time and wouldn’t walk across the beam. I loved high ropes.

Spotlight was our night activity. In 3 out of 5 games Sonna and I survived. In the first game everyone ran towards the court except these 3 boys, Sonna, Krishna and I. We followed the boys because we had no idea where to hide. While we were hiding a boy farted and I burst out laughing. Luckily no parent was around!

In the middle of the night I heard a loud snore that sounded like a monster!

I woke up early in the morning because of a snore. I got dressed and filled up our drink bottle because we had the gun walk. We visited the museum and watched a film where cannons were built in world war 2, the place where we will be going to. In the gun walk we walked up and down steep hills. When we arrived we went into a tunnel and found a white tailed spider!

Next we had our dirtiest activity, the survivor course. For survivor group A and B versed each other by doing all the activities the fastest. One of the course was to climb through tires. While Jason was climbing out a parent was pulling him out but suddenly his pants fell off! Luckily only Sonna saw it. At the end goup B won. Everyone was all muddy so the adult said there is a creak where the clean water are so everyone went in.When we got in we realized the adult tricked us. When everyone came out they were so muddy but no one complained because it was so cool!

Our next activity was more relaxing because it was orienteering. Sonna and I were the first to find all the signs. Althogh Krishna was in our group she did nothing. Later some boys also found all of them. Because the boys knew what the word was they won.
Our last activity for today was the scariest. It was the Burma Trail. Krishna bet that if she does scream or cry she would give Sonna and I a crunchie each. Mr Crowhurst told us the history of the burma trail to make everyone get really scared. Because we were the last group to go we heard many screams that kind of scared us. Kyle and some boys sang songs to prevent everyone from getting frightened. We could se all the parents because of the moon. Suddenly Sonna stopped and said Krishna is crying. We had a parent with us for half of the journey. The Burma trail wasnt scary but in fact exciting.
On Thursday we had election day where we got to choose 3 activities we are going to do for the day. My first choice was high ropes. We got a turn on the flying kiwi. The flying kiwi is when we get catapulted into the air. I didn't scream although a lot of other people did scream.
My next elective was kayaking. Because there was massive waves so we kayaked close to the rocks. After one hour I got really sea sick although I don’t get sick easily.
And lastly we had our last elective and also our last activity at camp was beach bum. Sonna and I built a turtle with sand. When we were about to leave a boy stepped on our turtle and got in big trouble although we didn’t mind.

Because we did all our night activities so we had a concert. People did comedy acts and
singing. My favourite was Mr Glogoski and Mr Pete’s comedy pupet show.
On our last day we cleaned and got ready for going home. The 6.5 km walk seemed so short. When I arrived home I was glad to sleep in a much more comfortable bed.
Motatupu camp was awesome! My favourite was the high ropes!
